Reconstruction and remodeling of Skoda Palace in Prague’s New Town.
The building on lot no. 718, New Town cadastre (today no. 35 Jungmannova street) was built between 1920’s and 1930’s as an office building for the general headquarters of Skoda factory in Plzen replacing several buildings. The building was designed by Prof. Pavel Janak and Karlin construction company Nekvasil built it and provided the execution design. The entire building was completed in 1926 and the following remodeling did not finish until 1930’s, especially the Jungmannova – Charvátova corner.
The second part was completed in 1938 including the remodeling of the second underground floor to serve as an air-raid shelter. The building has simple floor plan and reinforced steel structure with many unique details.
The building has two underground and seven aboveground floors. The designers of the contemporary reconstruction decided to use contemporary materials and technology to distinguish the original building from the new sections. However, structural evaluation revealed the necessity to reinforce all vertical and horizontal structures including a complex reconstruction of utility service lines. The reconstruction included extensive interior restorations. The building’s layout was also modified. The building’s corridor reminiscent of a passage connecting Jungmannova and Charvátova street is now used as exposition space without any major reconstruction of the original structures.
The building now houses the entire City Council of the Capital City of Prague and features new offices and an automatic archive. Special attention was paid to secure data transport (transport and city police files). The palace also includes representative offices of the mayor, medical offices and cafeterias. The underground parking system provides parking for 33 cars. The Skoda Place building now serves as the main communication place between the city council and citizens.
